For lighting designer Uno Lai, illumination is an art. His most prominent project, the Taipei 101 Tower lighting renovation, is emblazoned across the city’s skyline every night. One of the influential lighting designers in Asia, Uno Lai sees lighting as art that can transform spaces and lives. His years of international studies and experience in different fields, such as photography, theater, and interior design, allowed him to develop a rich aesthetic and an evolving creative spirit.

In 2005, Lai founded Unolai Lighting Design in New York. Later, he set up offices in Shanghai, Taipei and Shenzhen respectively, putting his lighting designs in some of the most important cities around the world.

In 2015, he founded Uno Lab with a unique vision, focusing on new media design and architectural lighting to create brand new experiences with light. He launched UnoLights to explore experimental lighting design, hoping to make better lighting accessible to the public.

Lai is a certified professional lighting designer in the United States and the global director and coordinator of the Greater China Region of the IALD International Lighting Designers Association. Other well-known projects include the night view renovation of Shanghai Bund, the lighting reengineering of Taichung Park, and the design plan of Hyatt, Sida House, and Intercontinental Hotel. His latest works include the Taipei Sky Tower, Southport World Pearl, Tao Zhuyin Garden, and City Light Transformation of Grand Hyatt Banquet Hall in Seoul, South Korea.

In 2022, Lai was invited to lead the design for lighting the Love River Bay for the Taiwan Lantern Festival, connecting six bridges across the river to create a seven-kilometre display that connects with the Kaohsiung Music Center. The work won the silver medal at the 2022 Novum Design Awards. He was also asked to direct the New Year fireworks show at Taipei 101, which rang in 2023 with over 16,000 fireworks.
