He is the founder of the first professional percussion ensemble in Taiwan

Tzong-Ching Ju graduated from the National Taiwan University of Arts in 1982, becoming the first Chinese person to receive a diploma in percussion performance. After returning to Taiwan, he served as the principal percussionist of the Taiwan Provincial Symphony Orchestra, actively engaging in the music scene. In January 1986, he founded the Tzong-Ching Ju Percussion Ensemble, establishing a significant platform for international percussion music development. In 2023, the ensemble has 21 teaching centers in Taiwan and 24 globally. With his professional expertise, Ju provides diverse opportunities for young percussion enthusiasts in Taiwan, connecting the country’s percussion music scene with the international community. He aims to share the beauty of art and culture through percussion, injecting positive energy into society and enriching each day with meaningful experiences.

For Ju, having music accompany one’s life brings resonance and solace amid its ups and downs. He continues to invest his efforts in various aspects of the field, advocating for the development of performing arts. Each stage of his journey unfolds like a different movement in music, brimming with infinite possibilities through the combination of musical notes.

Ju has received numerous awards, including the Youth Award, Ten Outstanding Young Persons, Golden Tripod Award, Golden Melody Award, National Award for Arts and the Presidential Commendation Medal. He was honoured with the Outstanding Contribution Award and Lifetime Education Achievement Award by the International Percussive Arts Society. In 2016, he was inducted into the PAS Hall of Fame, making him the first person of Chinese descent to receive this honour.

In 2022, the Tzong-Ching Ju Percussion Ensemble performed at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) in the United States, leaving a profound impact on the audience comprising two thousand percussionists from around the world. After a four-year hiatus, the 11th Taiwan International Percussion Convention (TIPC) was held in 2023, featuring the fourth rendition of the Hundred Marimbas concert, showcasing the captivating unity of the percussion community in the post-pandemic era.

Did You Know?


Tzong-Ching Ju is not only a renowned percussionist but also a dedicated advocate for arts education, theatre management and cultural administration. In Taiwan, he played a pivotal role in transforming the National Chiang Kai-shek Cultural Center (National Theatre and Concert Hall) into a public institution. He also contributed significantly to the establishment of the “single legal entity, multiple venues” operational model for three national-level theatres in the north, central and southern regions of Taiwan. Over the past two decades, Ju has been a key contributor to the professional governance of national-level theatres, driving the pursuit of excellence in performing arts.
