Lui Tuck Yew

Singapore’s Ambassador to the United States of America, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA)

Newly minted diplomat tasked with deepening bilateral ties with the world’s most powerful nation

As Singapore’s newly appointed ambassador to America, Lui Tuck Yew’s role is as distinguished as it is vital. To strengthen relations, Lui must draw on his extensive diplomatic and leadership skills, which he has thanks to stints as Singapore’s ambassador to the People’s Republic of China (2019 to 2023) and Japan (2017 to 2019).

Although Lui’s political career was relatively short-lived––nine years––it was nevertheless studded with notable achievements. Following his election as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Tanjong Pagar GRC in 2006, he assumed positions of increasing responsibility within the government, serving as Minister of State for Education, Acting Minister of Information, Communications and the Arts, and eventually a full minister in 2010. Most significantly, Lui assumed the mantle of Minister of Transport in 2011.

In the public sector, Lui’s legacy extends from his appointment as Chief of Navy to chief executive of the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) and later, chief executive officer of the Housing and Development Board (HDB). A string of accolades bear testament to his high-flying career: The Public Administration Medal (Bronze) (Military) in 1993; the Public Administration Medal (Gold) (Military) in 2000; and the Long Service Medal in 2005.

Outside his professional life, Lui finds joy in reading, travelling and sports like cricket, baseball and American football. Married to Madam Teng Soo Fen, the couple have two children.
