Designer Tsai-Hsia Wang Chen of Shiatzy Chen tells a different Chinese cultural story every season

Shiatzy Chen founder Tsai-Hsia Wang Chen tells the ultimate story of craftsmanship through the luxury label’s neo-Chinese chic. The aesthetic marries classic Chinese elements—such as traditional embroidery and Oriental imagery—contemporary silhouettes, and Western tailoring techniques, to create a timeless look that is distinctly Asian.

Shiatzy Chen was originally a knitwear company when it launched in 1978. Since then, the brand has become representative of Taiwanese high fashion and has been referred to as the “Chanel of Taiwan”. Tsai-Hsia Wang Chen, who started as a seamstress, rendered the brand with impeccable tailoring and craftsmanship, successfully exporting its unique aesthetic to the world.

Since debuting at Paris Fashion Week in 2008, Shiatzy Chen has opened 70 retail locations around Asia, including a boutique in Paris’ swanky Avenue Montaigne. In 2010, she became the first Chinese member of the Fédération Française de la Couture. In October 2020, after appearing for 23 consecutive seasons at Paris Fashion Week, Shiatzy Chen launched its Spring/Summer 2021 collection online with a film inspired by Mulan.
