Toton Januar

Co-Founder and Designer, Tonton

Toton Januar is acclaimed for his androgynous clothes that challenge gender, beauty and cultural norms in Indonesia. As a child, he was heavily influenced by his seamstress single mother, and was set on entering the world of fashion. To appease his mother’s worries of being a starving artist, he enrolled in engineering, but soon switched to Media Broadcasting. It was during his modeling gigs that he sought to fully immerse himself in the fashion industry. Thus, he took a course on Fashion Study at Parsons New School of Design in New York. Then, he founded his ready-to-wear label in 2012 with collections that are injected with emotion without being imposing. Still, it is the thoughtful “marriage of tradition and modernity without sacrificing femininity” that won him numerous international retailers, and he began exhibiting at Paris Fashion Week regularly. The label has won the prestigious International Woolmark Prize Asia Regional Final 2016/2017 in the Womenswear category. In 2016, Toton was one of the Indonesian designers invited to exhibit at the Fenwick pop-up shop in London, where President Joko Widodo popped by for a brief visit during a political trip to the UK.
