Malaysian badminton star who overcame bone tuberculosis to become part of Malaysia’s first-ever mixed doubles world champion duo
Toh Ee Wei has established herself as a defining force in Malaysian mixed doubles badminton scene, demonstrating extraordinary resilience both on and off the court. Together with partner Chen Tang Jie, she reached a career-high world number three ranking in 2025 following their triumph at the BWF World Championships in Paris when they became the nation's first-ever mixed doubles world champions.
The pair, who have competed together since reuniting in December 2022, claimed their first BWF World Tour title at the 2021 Orleans Masters and have since accumulated four titles, establishing themselves among the world's elite mixed doubles teams.
Her badminton journey began at age seven in Melaka, encouraged by her father and nurtured through her early years at local coaching centres. What truly distinguishes Toh's journey is her comeback—in 2022, she battled bone tuberculosis, an illness that tested her resolve but ultimately strengthened her mental fortitude on court. Her family's unwavering support during that period proved instrumental in her return to the sport she loves.
Where Chen brings aggressive firepower, Toh provides defensive solidity—deft flicks, sharp court reads and mental fortitude that transforms pressure into precision. Following their mixed doubles world championship victory, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh presented her with RM50,000, with Toh expressing her vision to establish a badminton academy in Melaka to nurture the country’s next generation of players.
