The statesman and authority on economic and social policies has risen to the apex of Singapore politics

Tharman Shanmugaratnam was sworn in as Singapore’s ninth president on 14 September 2023 after a landmark victory with 70.41 per cent of the vote. His appointment capped a distinguished 22-year career in public service, during which he served as senior minister, deputy prime minister, and minister for finance, education, and economic and social policies. He also chaired the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) from 2011 to 2023, shaping the nation’s fiscal stability and international economic standing.

As president, Tharman champions unity, inclusion, and integrity in national leadership, continuing a lifelong commitment to advancing equity and opportunity in Singaporean society. Beyond his presidential duties, he remains an influential figure across key national and global institutions. His previous leadership roles include chairing the National Jobs Council, the Economic Development Board’s International Advisory Council, the Singapore Indian Development Association, and the Ong Teng Cheong Labour Leadership Institute. He also served as deputy chairman of GIC.

On the world stage, Tharman chairs the Group of Thirty, an international council of economic and financial leaders from both public and private sectors, and co-chairs the High-Level Advisory Council on Jobs, established by the World Bank Group in July 2024.

He is married to Jane Yumiko Ittogi, who is active in the arts and social sectors, and together they have a daughter and three sons.
