Tengku Datin Paduka Setia Zatashah

Activist and Environmentalist

A royal environmentalist and activist, Tengku Zatashah Idris leads and empowers Malaysians towards a better and cleaner environment

Tengku Zatashah Idris is the daughter of the ruler of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, and an environmental and social activist. She is known for spearheading one of the biggest movements in the country against the single use of plastic. Through the #SayNo2Plastic campaign, she advocated to Malaysians on social media to avoid using single-use plastic, often leading by example by carrying a tiffin carrier to pack food and using metal straws.

Zatashah is also behind several successful beach clean-ups, dive clean-ups, coral replanting and tree planting initiatives. In 2019, she was awarded for her environmental efforts at the International Dive and Maritime Expo, Adex Singapore, and named Adex Ocean Ambassador.

Zatashah, who is married to Dato' Setia Aubry Rahim Mennesson, is also a royal patron of Make-A-Wish-Malaysia and a volunteer at Kechara Soup Kitchen for the homeless. In 2016, she launched the #zerofoodwastage campaign, encouraging hotels and supermarkets to direct their food surplus to Kechara Soup Kitchen. One of her more recent campaigns is aimed at raising awareness and educating people about properly disposing face masks and gloves, which with the rise of PPE litter threatens to worsen plastic pollution.

Outside of her charitable work and environmental activism, Idris is the president of Alliance Française Kuala Lumpur, a non-profit that promotes the French language and culture.
