Renowned Malaysian businessman Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary is also a philanthropist who is deeply committed to education and the arts. He established Albukhary International University, a private non-profit institution, in Alor Setar, Kedah. The university offers a holistic education to a diverse student body from over 40 nationalities. Having grown up in poverty and

leaving school at a young age, he founded the Albukhary Scholarship Programme to provide underprivileged local and international students access to higher education at no cost. In addition, he founded the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia in 1998, housing an impressive collection of 10,000 Islamic artifacts. The Albukhary Foundation also features a permanent gallery at the British Museum showcasing art from the Islamic world.
