The accomplished actress has put Singapore on the global stage with roles in international productions

With a career spanning decades and different artistic media, Tan Kheng Hua is living proof that age is just a number and that creativity knows no bounds.

The 60-year-old rose to fame with a memorable supporting role in the 2018 Hollywood blockbuster Crazy Rich Asians. Her portrayal of Kerry Chu, mother of protagonist Rachel Chu, earned her widespread acclaim. This led to a role as Mei-Li on American TV network CW’s reboot of the classic 1970s martial arts series, Kung Fu. The series ran from 2021 to 2023.

Tan’s other notable appearances include roles in HBO Asia’s Serangoon Road and Netflix’s Marco Polo. But for many Singaporeans, it was for her career-defining role as Margaret on the iconic local sitcom Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd that she is cherished. That performance earned her an Asian Television Award for Best Actress (Comedy) in 2002.

Beyond the screen, she cuts an eminent figure in Singapore theatre, contributing both as an actress as well as an independent creative producer across various genres, from drama to musicals.

Amid her thriving career, Tan has also cherished her role as a parent. She's found that providing a safe, loving environment and allowing her daughter, Lim Shi-An, to explore and think independently is the key to fostering a strong, empowered individual. She is currently in a relationship with Canadian Kendell Dickinson.

“I am 60 and I feel like I’ve done so much and yet there’s still SO much I want to do, can do and quite possibly will do! I am 60, more wrinkly, age-spotty and creaky than ever but also more vital, happy, alive and energetic!”
