Sign language interpreter, Radio Televisyen Malaysia
A veteran sign language interpreter renowned for bridging deaf and hearing communities and championing accessibility for all
Tan Bee Lee is a veteran Malaysian sign language interpreter whose career has quietly transformed accessibility for the deaf community. Inspired by her younger sister, who is deaf, Tan began her journey as a teacher for the deaf, dedicating 17 years to education before becoming Malaysia’s first court sign language interpreter at the Federal Court in 1994.
Her work extends beyond the courtroom. From around 1985, Tan became a familiar presence on television, interpreting news and official communications on shows such as Selamat Pagi Malaysia, using expressive facial cues and precise signing to ensure clarity and understanding. Across decades of service, she has become a bridge between the deaf and hearing communities, translating not just words but meaning, nuance and intent.
Tan’s decades-long commitment was formally recognised in June 2025 when she was awarded the Bintang Ahli Mangku Negara (AMN) by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim. She regards this honour as symbolic for all sign language interpreters who work largely unseen yet are essential to promoting inclusivity and fairness in Malaysian society.
Beyond recognition, Tan Bee Lee’s influence lies in her dedication to accessibility and her role as a visual storyteller. Whether in courtrooms, classrooms, or on broadcast television, she has amplified the voices of the voiceless and set the standard for professional interpretation in Malaysia. Her legacy is one of quiet but powerful change, ensuring that information, opportunity, and participation are open to all.
