Co-founder, Klean
For getting people to recycle by rewarding them for it
Syed Zain Almohdzar, the co-founder of the recycling platform Klean, aims to tackle the problem of transforming public perception around the value and purpose of recycling plastic. Klean utilises reverse vending machines (RVMs) that are powered by artificial intelligence, coupled with a rewards-based mobile app to incentivise consumers to recycle empty plastic bottles, aluminium cans and clean food containers.
Recycling isn’t a common practice in Malaysia, which is why Klean’s RVMs are designed to drive that behavioural change. Klean is the first locally designed and assembled VMs in Malaysia, with 60 machines currently operational across the country.
In July 2024, Ficus Capital, the world’s first Islamic Environment, Social, and Governance venture capital firm, announced that it would invest RM2 million into Klean to further support its container recovery initiatives, RVM network expansion, and regional operations enhancements in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and Fiji.
“The use of plastic can be sustainable if there are proper systems in place that are accessible to the general public to recycle and reintroduce the plastics into the circulation.”
