President, SM Supermalls
The SM Supermalls leader is driving expansion, innovation and community care
Assuming the presidency of SM Supermalls amid the pandemic, Steven Tan has continued to steer the company with remarkable foresight and resilience. Under his leadership, SM not only weathered the crisis but strengthened its position, increasing revenue, occupancy rates and foot traffic. In recognition of his vision, Tan was named Global Filipino Executive of the Year at the 2022 Asian CEO Awards, underscoring his commitment to community and nation-building.
2025 marked a milestone year as SM Supermalls celebrated its 40th anniversary with a glittering Partners’ Appreciation Night at Conrad Manila. Reflecting on four decades of growth, Tan emphasised the ethos of malasakit, the culture of care that remains central to SM’s mission. That same year, he oversaw ambitious expansion plans, including new malls in Zamboanga, Sta Rosa in Nuvali, Malolos and the revival of the iconic SM Harrison Plaza, blending global retail experiences with local character.
Beyond expansion, Tan championed sustainability initiatives, enhanced customer experiences, and strengthened human resources programmes, reinforcing SM’s leadership in the Philippine retail sector. His civic-minded approach continues to shine: in 2023, he partnered with the Commission on Elections to facilitate mall voting for over 8,000 registered voters nationwide, highlighting his belief that business can serve as a force for social good.
With 88 malls across the country and a reputation for innovation and inclusivity, Tan leads SM into its fifth decade with the same vision that defined its founding: creating spaces where communities thrive, commerce prospers and people come together.
“Change keeps me going. You can fear change or confront it as an opportunity—and I always choose the latter.”
