Sophihya Liu

Baseball Umpire

Sophihya Liu, the first female umpire in Taiwanese baseball, hopes to strike out gender discrimination in the sport

Sophihya Liu is known as the former teen psychic who used to pick out lucky numbers at the temple, but left to pursue her dream of joining baseball. After being the first female certified by the Chinese Taipei Baseball Association, she faced discrimination from both players and fellow umpires, who told her that girls were not allowed to touch the ball and that there was no equipment for her. She persevered and became the first female home plate umpire after her interpreting skills led the New York Yankees to sponsor her gear.

Aside from her umpiring duties, she participated in the 2017 Global Sports Mentoring Program in the US, works with the Garden of Hope Foundation, an NGO that serves abused women, and co-founded both Taiwan Women’s Baseball Advocate Association and Taiwan Sports Forward Associations, groups that promote gender equality in baseball.
