Owner, Rekso Group (Teh Botol)
In Indonesia, Teh Cap Botol—the first ready-to-drink tea—was the work of Sogeiharto Sosrodjojo’s father, who put up the businesses in 1940 in the family’s hometown in Slawi, Central Java. They made the tea fresh for consumers, but needed to fix issues such as the loss of freshness and spillages during delivery.
Sosrodjojo’s father (born Souw Seng Kiam) had the idea to put the tea in a recycled ketchup bottle. In 1969, he sold the first ready-to-drink tea. Since then, the Rekso company has expanded to other products in the food and beverage industry. Their flagship companies include Sinar Sosro and the ubiquitous Teh Botol Sosro, a sweet jasmine tea that has earned more local hearts than Coca-Cola.
The family also have significant shares in Rekso Nasional Food, which is the biggest franchiser of the fast-food chain McDonald’s. Additionally, they run Gunung Slamat, the most prominent private tea plantation in Indonesia, which is known for producing teas.
