The Icons | Simon Yam is a Hong Kong cinema legend with a larger-than-life personality

Simon Yam’s meteoric film and television career began in the 1970s as an extra. Known for his magnetic screen presence, he soon made his mark by taking on fearless roles from ruthless triad bosses in Election (2005) to morally complex policemen in PTU (2003) and even a Hollywood turn opposite Angelina Jolie in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider–The Cradle of Life (2003).

With more than 200 acting credits and counting, Yam remains one of Hong Kong’s most respected actors. In 2010, he won Best Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards for his role in Echoes of the Rainbow (2010). His influence was again recognised in 2024 at the 9th London East Asia Film Festival where he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award.

He is married to supermodel Qiqi Yam. Together they have a daughter, Ella.

“Style is a fusion of culture. Whether it’s through fashion, painting or different movie roles, they should reflect your unique aesthetic eye.”
