Founder, Fieldoffice Architects

Sheng Yuan Huang’s 28-year immersion in Yilan makes a case for culturally and environmentally connected design

Inspired by the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of both life and design, Sheng Yuan Huang founded Fieldoffice Architects, employing experts in the field who have chosen to live in Yilan, Taiwan. The depth of his immersion has led to projects that are integrated into the existing natural landscape and connected to the agricultural county’s unique culture.

Among his most notable projects include the Ludong Cultural Working House and the Cloud Gate Theatre, which both won the prestigious Far Eastern Architectural Design Award, a large-scale urban preservation venture called Vascular Bundle, and the Cherry Orchard Cemetery in Jiaoxi.

Sheng Yuan was born in Taipei in 1963. He received his Master of Architecture with Honors from Yale University in 1991 and taught at North Carolina State University before returning to Taipei in 1993 to establish Fieldoffice Architects. He continues to be a professor at Chun-Yuan Christian University, Department of Architecture, and at National Yilan University, Graduate Institute of Architecture and Sustainable Planning. He is also a member of the Architecture and Arts Committee of the Cultural Development Association.
