Singer
A multiple record-breaking music artiste, Dato’ Sheila Majid has spent four decades steering the course of Malaysian music history
With her record-breaking albums and sold-out concerts, the legendary Dato’ Sheila Majid has been pushing the boundaries of the Malaysian music scene since the release of her first album, Dimensi Baru, with the track Pengemis Muda launching her into the spotlight. The youngest of eight siblings, her break into the music industry in 1985 marked the beginning of her long list of accomplishments.
The release of her second album, Emosi, a year later made her the first non-Indonesian to win the Indonesian BASF Award for Best Female R&B Artist in 1987. Interest in her music grew beyond local shores to other countries. In 1989, after her performance at the Tokyo Music Festival where she won America’s International Star Search Award for Best Female Vocalist, she was invited to perform in Japan. Notably, she was the first Malaysian artiste to break into the Japan music market and the first Malaysian artiste to perform a solo at London’s West End in the Royalty Theatre in 1996.
Dato’ Sheila’s best-selling album, Legenda, was released in 1990. This was complemented by a two-year nationwide tour, culminating in a concert at Stadium Negara, Kuala Lumpur with an audience of 10,000. In the years that followed, Sheila continued to make headlines, including the winning of four awards, most notably Best Pop Album and Song of the Year at the Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM) 2000 for her album, Ku Mohon in November 1999.
In 2000, she became the first local artiste to perform at Dewan Filharmonic PETRONAS in KL, with sold-out concerts for two consecutive nights. Her album, Cinta Kita and its first single, Kerinduan, which was a collaborative effort with Indonesian musicians like Andi Rianto, Tohpati and Indra Lesmana, reached number one in Indonesia.
In 2025, Dato’ Sheila celebrates an extraordinary 40 years in music—a milestone that not only honours her timeless voice but also her enduring influence on Malaysian pop culture. Marking the anniversary with a nationwide concert tour and a commemorative album revisiting her greatest hits, Sheila continues to captivate audiences old and new with the same grace and charisma that first made her a household name.
