Datin Sri Sharifah Menyalara “Lara” Hussein

Datin Sri Sharifah Menyalara Hussein, widely known as Lara, is a trailblazing force in Malaysia’s advertising and communications industry. Having developed her global perspective during her formative years studying in Paris, she held senior roles at Bates, Dentsu and Young & Rubicam before founding M&C Saatchi Malaysia in 2003, transforming it into a powerhouse serving major brands such as Axiata, CIMB and Astro. In 2019, she made history as the first Malaysian woman to receive the Business Leader of the Year award at the Women Leading Change Awards.

In a landmark move, Hussein led the agency through a management buyout to establish M+C Saatchi KARSA, transitioning the business after 23 years within the global network into a fully Malaysian-owned, led and staffed agency. Her leadership balances creative elegance with critical reflection, steering the home-grown agency to deliver culturally resonant campaigns and drive local talent development.

Beyond her agency impact, Hussein is deeply committed to social development and youth empowerment. In November 2025, she was appointed chairman of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Foundation (YTAR), making history as the first non-minister to hold the position following amendments to the YTAR Act. Continuing her chairmanship into 2026, she guides the foundation’s mission to support high-potential, underprivileged Malaysian youth through education, leadership development and long-term mentorship.
