Tibetan-born choreographer Sang Jijia became CCDC artistic director in 2025

Sang Jijia is the artistic director of Hong Kong’s City Contemporary Dance Company, appointed in November 2024 and formally assuming the role on January 1, 2025. A leading figure in Chinese contemporary dance, Sang served as CCDC’s resident choreographer from 2015 to 2024, having earlier danced with the company from 1999 to 2002.

An ethnic Tibetan, he received an Asian Cultural Council fellowship to study in the United States and, in 2002, was selected for the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative to study with William Forsythe, later working with Ballet Frankfurt and The Forsythe Company. He has created works for companies including Carte Blanche, Spellbound Contemporary Ballet and GöteborgsOperans Danskompani, and in 2023 was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

As artistic director, Sang Jijia has overseen new stagings and revivals that foreground technology, identity and urban experience in Hong Kong, including the 2025 season opener Mr Blank 2.0, along with various creations and collaborations within the company’s repertoire.
