The activist dedicates her life to helping Muslim women in Malaysia recognise their rights to equality and justice

For 25 years, Rozana Isa has been a fearless advocate for Muslim women’s rights in Malaysia, dedicating her career to promoting equality and justice within the framework of Islam. With over two decades of experience in women’s rights activism, Rozana has worked to create safe, supportive spaces for women to express themselves and claim their rights, particularly within Malaysia’s complex sociopolitical landscape. Under her leadership, Sisters In Islam continues to engage in public debate on Islam, women’s rights, and fundamental liberties, challenging discriminatory practices.

In May 2024, Rozana was part of the Malaysian delegation at the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) alongside Women, Family, and Community Development Minister Nancy Shukri. During the convention, Rozana delivered a powerful address, calling for stronger government action on issues such as female genital mutilation (FGM) and women’s financial rights, urging the government to take responsibility for data collection and legal reforms.

In recent years, Rozana has completed a global leadership programme and participated in coaching sessions that have deepened her understanding of human connection and empowered her to facilitate difficult conversations about justice and equality. Her work continues to pave the way for long-term engagement with communities and systemic reforms in Malaysia, ensuring that women's rights are upheld. Her influence stretches beyond borders, impacting both regional and global movements for gender equality.
