Ronnie Lim is transforming OMS Group into a powerhouse in submarine cable technology and digital infrastructure

Ronnie Lim has transformed OMS Group from a family-run operation into a global subsea telecommunications powerhouse commanding 12 per cent of the world's cable ship fleet—a remarkable achievement in an industry with only 60 cable ships globally. At 44, the Group CEO oversees five cable ships that form the invisible backbone connecting continents through underwater digital infrastructure.

Since assuming leadership in 2015, Lim has driven extraordinary growth: OMS Group has installed over 380,000 kilometres of submarine cables and maintained 430,000 kilometres worldwide. His strategic vision attracted US$400 million from global investment firm KKR in October 2023, followed by US$293 million in syndicated facilities in June 2024—capital that accelerated OMS's transformation into a comprehensive provider spanning subsea cables and terrestrial networks.

In 2025, OMS secured a landmark contract as marine installation lead for the SX Tasman Express, connecting Sydney and Auckland with 400 terabits per second capacity across 16 fibre pairs. Scheduled for completion in 2028, this next-generation system is optimised for low-latency AI-driven cloud services and compatible with future submarine line terminal technologies.

His exceptional achievements earned him EY Entrepreneur of the Year 2024 Malaysia, with representation at the World Entrepreneur competition in Monaco in June 2025. Working alongside his father, Datuk Lim Soon Foo—OMS Group's founder and chairman—Ronnie Lim exemplifies how Malaysian companies can dominate specialised global industries when led by visionaries who recognise that invisible infrastructure shapes visible progress.
