He has built a formidable family business empire in Malaysia, Hong Kong, mainland China and beyond

A monumental figure in Malaysia and beyond, Robert Kuok has built a vast family business empire, cementing his status as Malaysia’s richest man for over two decades. The founder of the Kuok Group, he oversees operations in hospitality, agriculture, real estate, and logistics. The esteemed Shangri-La Hotels continue to be the Kuok Group’s crown jewel, and his substantial wealth is largely attributable to his stake in Wilmar International, the biggest listed palm oil refiner in the world.

Born in Johor Bahru in 1923, Kuok founded the company Kuok Brothers in 1949, initially trading rice, sugar, and flour. His remarkable rise earned him the title “the Sugar King of Asia,” as he once controlled 10 per cent of the global sugar market. In 1971, he opened the first Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore, expanding his hospitality ventures significantly.

Not only is Kuok a successful businessman, but he also has powerful political ties in China and Malaysia. Since the 1970s, he has made significant contributions to education and poverty alleviation through the Kuok Foundation. This includes funding non-profit healthcare projects, developing educational facilities, and providing scholarships.

At his 100th birthday celebration, Kuok received warm wishes from notable figures, including Li Ka-shing, highlighting his lasting impact on the business landscape. As of 2023, his wealth is valued at approximately US$11.8 billion, reaffirming his position at the top of Forbes’ list of Malaysia’s richest individuals. The Kuok Group is now being run by the next generation, who will continue the work of this remarkable entrepreneur.
