Senior vice president, Asia, Costco

Richard Chang oversees the next phase of Costco Taiwan

The Taiwanese love for shopping is evident in its robust mall culture. Leading the pack is Costco, the largest chain membership warehouse store in the world, first introduced in Kaoshiung in 1997. Currently, the retail chain has 14 branches in Taiwan and over three million active members. Conducting the complex retail orchestra is Richard Chang.

A former national basketball player, Chang represented the Chinese Taipei’s men’s basketball team in the Jones Cup in 1985 and retired in 1988 at the age of 25. In 1993, he joined Price Club, which later merged with Costco. He became the general manager of Costco Taiwan in 1995. He now serves as the president of the Asia-Pacific region, in charge of branches in the area.

Three Costco stores in Taiwan—located in Taipei’s Neihu District, New Taipei City’s Jhonghe District, and Taichung—rank among the top 10 profitable outlets out of 833 warehouses worldwide. Costco’s e-commerce sites, which account for 5 per cent to 6 per cent of the company’s business, also operates in Taiwan. Recently, US Costo bought the remaining 45% stake of its local partner, Costco President, for US$1.05 million.
