Regine Velasquez

Singer

Regine Velasquez, who is fondly called ‘Asia’s songbird,’ has set the benchmark for all Filipino balladeers and belters to come

She is probably the most sought-after singer in the Philippines. With her trademark sky-soaring notes and belting skills, she has set the benchmarks for all-powerful balladeers to come. Because of this, she has been commonly dubbed ‘Asia’s songbird’ and is considered one of the top singers in the region. Born in Tondo, Manila (one of the poorest areas in the city), her story is truly one for the books.

She started joining amateur singing contests at the age of six and it was not until she was 14, when she won a national singing contest, landing her a record deal with a leading studio. Although, it was not until 1989 that she won the Asia Pacific Singing contest held in Hong Kong, consequently capturing the imagination of a whole nation.

She eventually ventured into acting and has numerous hits under her belt. She also had several TV shows and is currently headlining ASAP, a Sunday variety show.  She is currently married to singer-songwriter, Ogie Alcacid, and they have a son together.
