Modern and Indian classical dancer, artistic director, Sutra Dance Theatre
The legendary dancer and choreographer has put Indian classical dance and Malaysia on the world stage
Datuk Ramli Ibrahim is one of the most accomplished Indian-classical dancers and choreographers globally, working in both classical and modern styles. A trail-blazer who defied the odds by forging a successful dance career, he has elevated Indian classical dance to worldwide recognition. Although drawn to dance since childhood, Ramli only seriously committed to the art while studying mechanical engineering at the University of Western Australia, where he trained in ballet and modern dance. Later, he specialised in Odissi under the tutelage of Deba Prasad Das in India.
Upon returning to Malaysia, he founded the Sutra Dance Theatre and the Sutra Foundation. He became a pivotal figure in promoting cultural diversity and bringing international recognition to Indian classical dance through acclaimed productions such as Jaya Ram. Ramli’s influence extends beyond performance: he has taught generations of dancers and thinkers while remaining a vocal advocate for the arts as integral to human and cultural development.
Since 2024, Ramli has sustained his prominent role as a cultural icon in Malaysia and abroad. Notably, in October 2025 his Sutra Dance Theatre completed a multi-city tour of India (Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and New Delhi) presenting the production Radhe! Radhe! and reinforcing Malaysia-India cultural links. He continues as Artistic Director of Sutra Dance Theatre and Chairman of the Sutra Foundation, while exploring cross-disciplinary collaborations such as a project with astrophysicist Tan Sri Mazlan Othman that merges arts and science.
His dedication has earned him numerous honours including the Padma Shri from India (2018), the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2009) and the Boh Cameronian Lifetime Achievement Award (2003).
