CEO, AEON Bank
She is advancing Malaysia’s digital and Islamic banking landscape at AEON Bank, drawing on three decades of financial expertise and a strong drive for innovation
YM Raja Datin Paduka Raja Teh Maimunah defied convention to build Malaysia’s first fully Islamic digital bank. In 2024, she launched AEON Bank before Treasury officials and industry leaders, championing a deceptively simple mission—safe, simplified and inclusive Shariah-compliant banking for all Malaysians. Her strategic ascent over three decades through Malaysia’s leading financial institutions has provided profound expertise and a steadfast commitment to authentic innovation within Islamic finance.
Her breakthrough came at Bursa Malaysia in 2009 with the launch of Bursa Suq Al-Sila, the world’s first end-to-end Shariah-compliant commodity trading platform. This innovation solved the problem of managing liquidity without relying on interest, earning industry-wide recognition and demonstrating her ability to reshape banking at its core. Raja went on to strengthen institutions as CEO of Hong Leong Islamic Bank and AmInvestment Bank, and as wholesale banking head at AmBank Group.
Her achievements have earned prestigious honours, including the ASEAN Outstanding Woman Banker Award at the 2025 ASEAN Banking & Finance Summit. Today, Raja Teh Maimunah leads AEON Bank’s digital drive, focusing on empowering digital natives and small businesses, and removing barriers for those excluded from formal banking. AEON Bank stands as her solution to bridging Malaysia’s banking divide, offering millions access to modern financial services.
Beyond her role at AEON, Raja Teh Maimunah influences the industry’s future as Public Interest Director and Independent Non-Executive Director at Bursa Malaysia, and as a board member at KWAP, overseeing retirement security for civil servants. Her leadership stands apart for blending quiet authority, bold vision and a commitment to progress for all Malaysians.
