Raja Sapta Oktohari believes Malaysia is ready to host the world’s biggest sporting events

Raja Sapta “Okto” Oktohari is Indonesia’s sports big man, having held various positions in local and international athletic committees over the span of his career.

Now, he is the president of the Indonesian Olympic Committee, which he is rallying to be more popularly known as the National Olympic Committee of Indonesia (NOC Indonesia). His involvement with the country’s Olympic delegation began in 2016 at the Rio de Janeiro Games, where he was appointed chef de mission of the Indonesian contingent.

Earlier in his career in sports, the businessman founded boxing promoter Mahkota Promotion in 2000. More than a decade later in 2014, he led the parent organisation of the Indonesian Bicycle Sport Association before becoming the Vice-President of the Asian Cycling Confederation from 2015-2019.

Oktohari, who was elected as the Indonesian Olympic Committee President in 2019, will serve only until 2023, but he already has big plans beyond his tenure, including aggressively pushing for Indonesia to become the host of the 2032 Olympics.

Indonesia was officially recognised by the International Olympic Committee in January 1952. Since then, it has taken home a total of 37 medals: 21 in badminton, 15 in weightlifting and one in archery.
