For giving Malaysian youths the chance to have their voices heard

Qyira Yusri has long been a vocal advocate for representation for the youth. Even when she was a communications student at Western Michigan University, she would find every opportunity to bring up politics in every conversation, be it with her friends, family or lecturers.

Having realised that Malaysia was behind the curve when it came to the minimal age at which youth were allowed to vote, Qyira and co-founder Tharma Pillai founded Undi 18, a student movement that ran a campaign on youth enfranchisement and democracy building.

In July 2019, they successfully advocated for the amendment of the Federal Constitution to reduce the minimum voting age from 21 to 18 years old. The amendment is set to enfranchise over 7.8 million new voters by the next general election, changing the landscape for Malaysian politics and potentially spelling more youth representation in the halls of power. Qyira has an unwavering belief that the casting of a vote is not a just privilege but a right and responsibility of every Malaysian.

Besides Unid 18, Qyira has been active in the education space, taking on roles with Teach for Malaysia, Closing The Gap Malaysia and Yayasan Tunku Abdul Rahman.
