Singapore’s first formally designated Leader of the Opposition

Pritam Singh is a lawyer and politician who is Singapore’s current Leader of the Opposition. The secretary-general of The Workers’ Party of Singapore has also been a member of parliament for the Aljunied group representation constituency since 2011. Singh was named by prime minister Lee Hsien Loong as the country’s head of the opposition following the results of the 2020 general election, in which the Workers’ Party won an unprecedented 10 seats in parliament.

The locum solicitor at Donaldson & Burkinshaw LLP has been noted for various efforts during his time in office. These include addressing racism and bigoted views in the country, calling out for more transparent fiscal policies, and pledging to donate half of the additional allowance he receives as Leader of the Opposition to help low-income residents and marginalised communities in Singapore.

Singh was a recipient of the Singapore Armed Forces Local Study Award scholarship for undergraduate studies at the National University of Singapore, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts degree. He is married to theatre practitioner Loveleen Kaur Walia and is the father of two daughters.
