With a long list of Indonesia’s favourite magazine titles as her résumé, Pia Alisjahbana pioneered print media for women as well as having significant careers in academe and politics

One of Indonesia’s most influential media moguls, Pia Alisjahbana (real name: Supia Alisjahbana Latifah) co-founded the FEMINA Group, which publishes 12 magazine titles including Femina, Indonesia’s first weekly women’s magazine, published in 1972. Other titles under the group include Gadis, Ayahbunda, Fit and Reader’s Digest Indonesia.

Before her foray into print media, Alisjahbana racked up impressive achievements in the academic world that began as a lecturer in the University of Indonesia. She became the head of the English department, and soon afterwards founded the university’s American Studies Graduate Programme and American Studies Centre. She became the executive secretary of the Consortium of Letters and Philosophy at the Ministry of Education from 1973-1985.

In 2009, in recognition of her contributions to print media, Alisjahbana was given the Lifetime Achievement Award from Ernst & Young.

Did You Know?


In 2015, the French government awarded Pia Alisjahbana the Chevalier dans l’Ordre de la Légion d'Honneur. She was the first person in Indonesia to receive this honorary title.
