Dato' Sri Phillip Siew

Founder and Chairman, Oriental Group

A reputable restaurateur and leading figure in Malaysia’s F&B industry, Phillip Siew is the man behind one of the largest restaurant groups in the country, the Oriental Group

Dato’ Sri Phillip Siew is a veteran restaurateur who is known for establishing the highly successful Oriental Group, a premier Chinese restaurant group in Malaysia that specialises in fine Cantonese cuisine. A respected figure in the F&B industry, Siew fell into the food business by way of marriage when he was recruited by his late father-in-law to help run his Tai Thong Group of restaurants.

Leaving his job at PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers), where he was beginning to re-think the prospect of spending the rest of his life behind a desk, Siew took a headlong leap into the industry, picking up everything he could along the way, and applying his corporate experience and insights into expanding the business, eventually listing it in 1997.

After selling the group in 2000, Siew partnered with former colleagues from Tai Thong to set up a small restaurant called The Oriental at the old Jaya Shopping Centre. Although he did not foresee expanding the business beyond a couple of outlets, it grew organically in the last two decades to encompass 16 diverse Chinese restaurants including Oriental Pavilion, The Ming Room, Noble House and Ruyi. Siew’s success could be attributed to a winning combination of young blood and savvy direction.
