The non-executive chairman of HSBC, Peter Wong was the bank’s Asia-Pacific chief executive until his retirement in 2021. He joined HSBC in 2005 as general manager and executive director, and was appointed chief executive in 2010, becoming the first Chinese person to take the role. During his time in charge he strengthened the bank’s position by sharpening its focus on Asia, by far its most profitable region.

Wong started his career at Citibank, where he worked from 1980 to 1997, and then moved to Standard Chartered, where his roles included chief executive of Hong Kong and director of greater China, before joining HSBC.

Peter Wong is chair of the Hong Kong Association of Banks, deputy chairman of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council’s Belt and Road Committee and of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s Exchange Fund Advisory Committee, and a board member of the China Banking Association and the Hong Kong Institute of Bankers. He is also a member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.

Peter Wong was a varsity football player in high school, later joining the soccer team at Indiana University when he studied there in the 1970s. In 2015, he gave an interview to his former coach, Jerry Yeagley, to talk about how the sport prepared him for a multinational banking career.
