Visual storytelling of Vietnam after three decades of exploration
Peter Steinhauer is a photographer and the author of four fine art photo monographs. He has lived and worked in Vietnam for 30 years, since 1993. In the early stages of his career, his photographic practice focused on portraiture, followed later by architecture in urban landscapes, man-made structures, and natural scenery.
Steinhauer's works are currently held in the collections of the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, as well as numerous private and corporate collections worldwide. He is the recipient of multiple international photography awards, including the Ford Foundation Fellowship for his work in Vietnam, three Communication Arts Photography Annual Awards of Excellence, and a two-time finalist for the Lucie Awards (2014 and 2017).
His debut work, Portraits and Landscapes (Edition Stemmle, Zurich, 2002), was followed by Enduring Spirit of Vietnam (voted “Best Photography Book of 2007” by Photo District News), Cocoons (Powerhouse Books, 2019), and his latest publication, SPIRES: Cathedrals of the Red River Delta (October 2025).
Most recently, "Vietnam - A 30-Year Artistic Journey" was a fine art photography exhibition presented by Hanoi Studio and Vietnam Society, showcasing significant color and black-and-white images from Peter Steinhauer's three decades of creation in Vietnam. Through his lens, Vietnam appears profound and unpretentious, weaving a visual narrative that embraces both the old and the new, a story that celebrates the beauty and humanity of the country and its people.
