Paul Chiang

Founder, Paul Chiang Art Center

At 80, artist Paul Chiang builds a world of art inspired by life, nature, and the pursuit of spirit

The transgenerational appeal of Paul Chiang’s work — a collection that spans decades — proves undeniable with every exhibition. A retrospective held in 2020 at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum drew a primarily younger audience, many of whom repeatedly visited the site. Like many artists, Chiang’s aesthetic shifts and flows.

His early works feature monochromatic shades, layering and texture. These were created overseas, where he spent his younger years as an artist. In 1997, he returned to Taiwan after 30 years. Colour appeared in his art for the first time when he moved to a seaside town in Taitung in 2008.

Chiang’s abstract creations continue to challenge the imagination. Inspired by the abundance of nature in Taitung, he conceptualised the Paul Chiang Art Center, a park that integrates art and architecture, in Jiangxiang Er Art Park. It is slated to fully open in 2024.

Some of his pieces are also displayed at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts in Taichung, the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts and the Dahin Foundation in Tanshui.
