Acclaimed Filipino designer Paul Cabral seeks to redefine traditional attire
Paul Cabral’s journey to becoming one of the Philippines’ most celebrated fashion designers took an unexpected path. Originally trained in accounting and working as a makeup artist, Cabral’s career pivoted when he was offered a role in fashion design. Eager to master the craft, he studied under renowned designers Aureo Alonzo and Joe Salazar.
Known for his attention to detail and love for local culture, Cabral has redefined traditional Filipino attire, creating modern interpretations of the barong Tagalog and other examples of Filipiniana. His designs have been worn by high-profile figures, including former President Joseph Estrada and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos. His 2015 commission to design attire for world leaders at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit solidified his reputation as a premier designer.
Despite his success, Cabral remains dedicated to his roots. He recalls starting by sourcing fabrics from public markets and handling every aspect of his business. Today, he advocates for indigenous fabrics like piña, emphasising the importance of supporting local weavers and investing in technology to grow the Philippine fashion industry.
In February 2024, Cabral held his first fashion show, unveiling the Una collection at the Laperal Mansion. The collection showcased his signature tailoring, with piña fabric as the centrepiece, developed and reimagined through innovative techniques. The show was a memorable debut, highlighting his respect for Filipino heritage.
