Patcharapon Tangruen

Artist

There’s no way you aren’t at least vaguely familiar with the caricature of a somewhat grumpy child dressed in a cyclopic bunny suit. Nicknamed Mardi, she is the star of Patcharapon, or Alex Face’s, body of work as the Banksy of Bangkok. Mardi has appeared on walls throughout Thailand and beyond, notably spotted abroad in Taiwan, Korea, London and Berlin. Her daddy’s rise to international recognition, however, didn’t come by luck. The former architecture student has been scouting and painting walls for the last 15 years, which has steadily amounted to well-attended gallery shows in present times. Alex’s last big achievement was his solo exhibition Alive at Bangkok CityCity Gallery (Dec 2016 – Feb 2017). The lighthearted murals reveals deeper themes upon closer inspection, often containing social commentary on poverty, society, and the environment. The grumpy Mardi was initially inspired by his daughter, and represents the feeling of a vulnerable child in an intimdating world. He hopes viewers are moved to think about the world their children will grow up in, and will be motivated to create change for a brighter future. After all, “street art is a tool that small people can use to say what they want to say.”
