The Power Couple | The Hong Kong-born, Shanghai-based artist and founder of Open Work is blending his multi-cultural influences through fashion, interior, design and beyond

Born into an entertainment family, the son of Taiwanese screen legend Sylvia Chang has carved out a creative path on his own terms.

The founder of creative studio Open Work modernises Chinese cultures and traditional crafts through his work. Having lived in in some of the world’s major cities, including Hong Kong, London and New York, Wang has developed a boundary-breaking mindset and cross-cultural instincts. Citing Virgil Abloh and Pharrell Williams as his fashion influences, the Chelsea College of Arts alumnus started his design career on a high note—in 2019, he designed an adorable quartet of pandas for Fendi and later turned it into a 10-foot-tall installation. His impressive collaborator list also includes Stella McCartney, for whom he designed animal-inspired air pods in 2021; and Li-Ning, the sportswear giant, who tapped Wang to design an installation that nods to Chinese architecture for its show at Paris’s Pompidou Centre. This year, Wang has created interactive installations for the Chinese New Year at Hong Kong’s Landmark Atrium and collaborated with Ferragamo to create the “long time no hug” chair.

Wang married Chinese model TianYi You in 2023. The couple, who are no strangers to luxury brands, exude fashion synergy on camera and in real life. They take fashion inspiration from their travels, day-to-day life and, of course, each other’s work. “I’d say we’ve become more of a fusion” in terms of their style, Wang says. “As a result, I think my style has become more original and unique.”

“I would define style as ‘freestyle’, because that's how I usually do all my creative projects —I set no boundaries.”
