His multicultural background and design experience has led to a successful luxury carpet brand
Omar Khan

It took a while before Omar Khan found his true calling. After studying at New York’s Parsons School of Design, Khan first worked as a visual merchandiser in Hong Kong before starting his own interior design company. Rug making wasn’t in his agenda at that time, but it would soon be as soon as he realised a dearth in the luxury carpets sector.

When he couldn’t find an ideal rug for a project, Khan simply produced one himself before eventually launching his own brand. Today, Omar Khan Rugs adorn upscale private homes and luxury hotels including St. Regis Maldives, Nobu Hotel London Shoreditch as well as upscale boutiques like the Christian Louboutin stores in Shanghai and Beijing.

September 2022 was a high point in the designer’s career with the opening of Else Kuala Lumpur, a boutique hotel that features Khan’s designs in the bedhead covers, rugs, and carpets.

While he didn’t study to be a carpet maker, Khan’s background certainly equipped him for his newfound career. He mines his multicultural upbringing for creative inspiration, and draws from his experiences in graphic design and visual merchandising in his creative process. More than that, Khan’s spatial intuition enables him to imagine the setting for his woven creations.
