Introducing Taiwanese culture to the world through drag performances

Nymphia Wind, born in Los Angeles and raised in Hong Kong, moved back to Taiwan at the age of six. While attending Quanrenshiyan High School, Nymphia began exploring and learning performing arts. Inspired by the American drag reality show RuPaul's Drag Race, she started performing as a drag queen while studying at the University of the Arts in the UK, becoming an active presence in nightclubs and events.

In 2022, Nymphia collaborated with the Taiwan Traditional Theatre Center to create a unique performance titled 2022 Taiwan Traditional Theatre Festival X Nymphia Wind: The Transformation. In February 2023, she won the championship at a drag performance competition hosted by Maddelynn Hatter.

In January 2024, Nymphia participated in the 16th season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, competing with queens from around the world. With her strong skills, impressive performances and innovative costumes, she made it to the finals and won the championship, becoming the second Asian contestant in 13 years to emerge victorious in the competition. This win sparked a wave of Nymphia mania across social media.

After her victory, Nymphia garnered attention from media across Taiwan and a large audience, and was invited by the Presidential Office to bring her drag queens from the The House of Wind troupe to perform and give a speech, making her the first drag queen to speak and perform at the Presidential Office. In July 2024, Nymphia took on a new challenge, performing at the Taiwan Pavilion at the Paris Cultural Olympics.

Nymphia is passionate about Taiwanese culture and strives to incorporate local elements into her performances. For instance, she often uses the banana, a common symbol in Taiwan, as a costume theme, earning the nickname “Banana Buddha”. In the RuPaul’s Drag Race finale, she wowed the audience with a costume inspired by Taiwan’s iconic beverage, bubble tea. During her performance at the Paris Cultural Olympics, Nymphia paid tribute to the Taiwanese goddess Mazu, creating a stunning set of performance costumes. In many interviews, Nymphia openly expresses her love for Taiwan, using her unique form of expression to showcase the beauty of Taiwanese culture to the world.
