Nurmala Kartini Pandjaitan Sjahrir

With her anthropological training and broad range of interests, Kartini continues to serve the society in different fields of work


Born from a family of Batak heritage, Kartini spent her childhood in Riau before moving to Jakarta in her teenage years. She studied anthropology for her undergraduate in Universitas Indonesia; her master and doctoral degrees came from Boston University. She is part of the Indonesian Anthropology Association and was the first female chair of the association. From thence, her career diverged into the diplomatic path, with Kartini serving as the Indonesian ambassador to Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay from 2010 to 2014. For her work, Kartini was granted the Order de Mayo el Mérito en el Grado Gran Cruz from the government of Argentina. From 2015 to 2019, she was the senior advisor on climate change issues at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment. From 2018 to 2020, Kartini was the representative of Indonesia on the Advisory Council of the ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (ASEAN-AIPR). Kartini has led PT Lippo Karawaci as a commissioner since October this year.
