Trailblazing director and screenwriter Nien Jen Wu is the pioneer of New Taiwanese Cinema

Director Nien Jen Wu continues to showcase his revolutionary approach to screenwriting and filmmaking through his production company, Wu’s Productions. A champion of the Taiwanese film industry since the early ‘80s, Wu has consistently bagged awards and nominations for his pioneering cinematic projects. He is an industry icon who continues to inspire aspiring filmmakers through his vision and creations.

Born into a coal miner’s family in 1952, Wu’s career started in 1975, writing stories for the local newspaper. He wrote his first screenplay in 1978 and has since written over 70 screenplays that have turned into films. His early works gave audiences charming portrayals of everyday living, paving the way for the New Taiwanese Cinema Movement. Wu is also one of the directors of the New Frontier Foundation and the chairman of the After School Association of Taiwan.
