The greatest women’s player in squash gives back to the community

Widely regarded as the greatest squash player of all time, Penang-born Datuk Nicol Ann David held the World No 1 ranking for an unprecedented 108 consecutive months from 2006 to 2015, making her the longest-reigning world champion in the sport’s history. Across a stellar career, she claimed eight World Championship titles, 10 Asian Championship wins, two Commonwealth gold medals and five Asian Games golds, cementing her status as Malaysia’s most decorated athlete. In 2021, she was named the World Games’ Greatest Athlete of All Time.

Since retiring in 2019, Nicol David has channelled her drive into the Nicol David Organisation, a foundation dedicated to empowering Malaysian youth through sports, education and wellbeing. Its programmes—Little Legends, Ibu Legends and Positive Play—have already benefited over 800 children and 100 mothers from B40 and M40 communities. In 2024, she was inducted into the Professional Squash Association Hall of Fame and appointed Pro-Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, following her 2022 honorary doctorate from the same institution.

Beyond her foundation work, Nicol serves as an Academy Member of Laureus and as a National Goodwill Ambassador for UNDP Malaysia. She has received numerous national honours, including the Order of Merit and the Commander of the Order of Meritorious Service (PJN), which carries the title Datuk. In 2024, she also served as Deputy Chef de Mission for Malaysia at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Through her sporting excellence, philanthropy and leadership, she continues to inspire a generation of Malaysians to pursue their potential both on and off the court.

“We believe that everyone has the potential to be a champion; they just need the opportunity.”
