The multi-talented businessman behind the success of McDonald's Vietnam and the Saigon Heat basketball team

Nguyen Bao Hoang (Henry) is currently the Chairman of Phoenix Holdings, a company specializing in investments across technology, consumer/retail, fintech, education, sports, media, and entertainment sectors. Previously, Henry served as the Managing Director of IDG Ventures Vietnam, a venture capital fund focused on consumer, technology, media, and telecommunications companies in Vietnam. In addition to these roles, he is the Director of Franchise Development, at McDonald's Corporation in Vietnam and the Executive Chairman of the digital banking platform Timo.

With a passion for sports, Henry founded the Saigon Heat in 2011, Vietnam's first professional basketball team, which competes in the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL). He is also a co-founder of the Vietnam Basketball Association (VBA), the country's professional basketball league. Henry currently serves as the President of the Vietnam Basketball Association and the Southeast Asia Basketball Association. Beyond his involvement in sports domestically, he is the CEO of Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC). The team joined Major League Soccer (MLS) in 2018 and established its own stadium, the Banc of California Stadium, in its inaugural season. LAFC clinched the MLS Cup championship in 2022.

Committed to advancing education in Vietnam, Henry is a founding trustee of the British University Vietnam and a member of the Board of Trustees of Fulbright University Vietnam, the country’s first non-profit private university.

Recognized globally for his leadership, Henry was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum and is a member of the Asia Society 21 initiative. He was honored with the “Asian Game Changer” award by the Asia Society of Northern California for his leadership and contributions to business, arts, and education, fostering cultural connections and exchange. Additionally, he serves as Chairman of the Board of Governors for Operation Smile Vietnam, a foundation providing life-changing surgeries for children.

Henry holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Harvard University, a Doctor of Medicine from Northwestern University, and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management, USA.
