Nattawut Poonpiriya, or Baz, has always been a movie aficionado. Despite not having an academic background in film studies, the Fine Arts and Graphic Design gradate draws inspiration and references from his favourite films and from directors such as Martin Scorsese and the masters from the 1970s and 80s. Aside from directing short films and viral videos, including iSTORIES for Honda, he has two thriller features, Countdown (2012), which won three categories at Suphannahong National Film awards, and Chalard Games Goeng or Bad Genius (2017), which won a record-breaking twelve categories. The thriller about cheating at university admission exams have been sweeping the awards, including: Audience Award at Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival and at Fukuoka International Film Festival 2017, Best Picture at Austin Fantastic Fest 2017, 3 wins at Fantasia Film Festival 2017, Best Asian Film at Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival 2018, Best Director at Thailand National Film Association Awards 2018, and nominations for Best Director at the Asia-Pacific Film Festival, and Best Screenwriter at Asian Film Awards 2018. His goal is to venture into other genres for his features. He hopes to explore other genres.
