New Sotheby’s Asia boss Nathan Drahi is embracing change at the venerable auction house

Profile

Still only in his mid-20s, Nathan Drahi assumed the challenging role of managing director of Sotheby’s Asia in 2021, taking over from his long-serving predecessor Kevin Ching. Drahi had previously worked in London—in private equity at alternative investment manager BC Partners and in investment banking at JP Morgan—and as a commercial officer at the auction house in Hong Kong; he will look to bring his deal-making skills from those industries to the increasingly investment-driven auction world.

He is the son of Sotheby’s owner, Patrick Drahi, who bought the auction house when it was still a listed company in 2019 and took it private the following year. A telecommunications tycoon, Drahi senior is the boss of European telecoms holding company Altice, which has or has had operations in countries including France, the US, Israel and Portugal.
