Narongchai Hemsuwan is the leader of Ko Jik, which is located at the mouth of the Wewul River, between Chanthaburi and Trat. The island covers an area of 700 acres, with only one village, Group 1, in Bang Chan Subdistrict, Khlung District, Chanthaburi Province. The fishing community has a population of about 388 people in 149 households who are all reliant on the environment and who have a stake in the conservation of the island. Koh Jik has become a model for community-based renewable energy, as it is powered mostly by clean energy from solar cells. This earns them carbon credits from the Clean Energy Fund for the Environment, and the money received from the carbon credits in turn goes to a community fund that reduces the cost burden of electricity in every household.
