Nadirah Zakariya

Photographer and Co-founder, Exposure + Photo

Nadirah Zakariya is known within and beyond Asia for her meaningful and captivating photographs

Nadirah Zakariya is an internationally published and exhibited photographer who is known for her captivating self-portraits. These were perhaps most memorably featured in her series on the skin condition vitiligo, which was published in Vogue Italia and shone a light on an affliction she has been dealing with since she was 16, where pigment loss affects some areas of the skin.

Growing up, Nadirah knew she was going to be an artist. Although she had been exposed to the art form through her father, a photography enthusiast, it was a black-and-white photography class during the graphic-design degree course at university that sealed the deal.

She later transferred to the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York to formally study photography and earned her degree in Fine Arts. In 2011, she was invited to hold her first solo exhibition, Daughters Ago, in New York. This was later followed by solo exhibitions Girlhood and Fuji-San Love Letters in Kuala Lumpur. Her work has also been exhibited in international group shows including We See You, We Hear You in London and I Am The Woman I Am at PhotoVogue Festival in Milan, Italy; and published in Vogue Italia, The New York Times, Bloomberg, Nylon, Vice and Dazed and Confused.

When Nadirah is not taking photographs, she is often sharing her knowledge and skills with budding photographers at workshops, or organising projects and exhibitions to encourage photographers to explore their art and push themselves as artists.
