Montserrat "Mons" Romulo

Columnist, Philippine Star

She writes, organises events, publishes books, and busies herself with Katutubo PH, a quarterly pop-up that showcases our local designers and artisanal products.

She belongs to a respectable political clan whose granduncle is the Philippine statesman Carlos P Romulo and her father Alberto Romulo is the former Congressman, three-term Senator, Budget Secretary to President Corazon Aquino and Finance Secretary, Executive Secretary and Foreign Affairs Sec to former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. Romulo has a regular column in the Philippine Star where she has been writing for close to 25 years.

She loves Philippine fashion and is proud of our Philippine culture that inspired her to open a pop-up that prides itself on purely Filipino-made products. Called Katutubo (which means 'homegrown'), it started with eleven vendors and now has more than 45 brands under its helm.

She has three children, Cheskie, Cara, and her son, Simon who is running for city councillor this upcoming election in Pasig City. Her siblings are also in politics - lawyer Roman Romulo is a Congressman, her younger sister Berna Puyat is the Secretary of Tourism and the youngest, Erwin Romulo is an award-winning musical director and writer.
