He is redefining modern horology through MING, the Malaysian watch brand acclaimed for its bold design philosophy and award-winning craftsmanship

Ming Thein is the founder and creative director of MING, a Malaysian–Swiss independent watch brand launched in 2017 that has earned global acclaim for its minimalist aesthetic, technical innovation, and collector-driven philosophy. An Oxford-trained physicist and professional photographer, Thein brings an analytical yet artistic approach to horology, creating timepieces that balance clean design with intricate engineering and hidden complexity.

Under his leadership, MING has achieved international recognition, winning the Sports Watch Prize at the 2024 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) for its 37.09 Bluefin—its second major GPHG victory after the 2019 Horological Revelation award. In 2025, the brand was again nominated in the Time Only category, marking its fourth nomination overall. Beyond awards, Thein continues to push boundaries through technical experimentation, most recently introducing the MING Polymesh—the world’s first 3D-printed titanium bracelet comprising 1,693 interlinked pieces—and the 57.04 Iris, the brand’s first destro (left-handed) timepiece featuring its fifth-generation design language.

Every new release from MING sells out within hours, underscoring the brand’s enduring appeal and growing influence in the world of independent watchmaking. Thein’s vision remains clear: to create watches with horological integrity, lasting value and timeless design.
